How to teach your dog to change positions

You’re essentially teaching clean position changes—down → sit (“up” command) and sit → stand—without your dog creeping forward or using sloppy movement. The key is clarity, precise timing, and not rushing it.

Down to Sit

Step-by-step:

1. Start with your dog in a solid down. 
2. Hold a treat right at their nose. 
3. Slowly lift the treat upward and slightly back toward their head.
   • This naturally shifts their weight back and brings the front up. 
4. The moment their elbows leave the ground → mark (“yes”) and reward. 

Important details:

• If your dog stands instead of sitting, your lure is too far forward—bring it more up and back. 
• If they crawl forward, reset and keep the lure tighter to their body. 

Add the cue:

Once they’re doing it reliably, say “up” right before you lure.  Yes, the command to have your dog go from down position to sit position is “up”.

Sit to Stand

This one is trickier because dogs tend to either walk forward or hop.

Step-by-step:

1. Start with your dog in a clean sit. 
2. Place a treat at their nose. 
3. Move your hand in an arc, passing by your dog’s nose and then straight forward, low and parallel to the ground.
   • Think: pulling them into a stand, not lifting them. 
4. As soon as their butt lifts → mark and reward. 

Important details:

• If your dog steps forward, you’re moving too far—make it a very small motion. 
• If they won’t stand, try slightly lowering the lure to encourage forward weight shift. 

Add the cue:

Add “stand” right before the movement once it’s consistent.

Clean Up the Position Changes

• Reward position, not motion
  Don’t reward halfway transitions—wait for a full sit or full stand. 
• Use a wall if needed
  Practice with your dog facing a wall to prevent forward movement. 
• Fade the lure early
  Switch to a hand signal, then verbal cue. 
• Work on stillness
  Once they hit position, pause for 1–2 seconds before rewarding so they don’t pop out.

Teach these as part of a position ladder:
